Greenhouse Design

Is there a corner of the internet where we share our happy greenhouse spaces? Here is mine… I came across this shed when we were looking for a chicken coop. As half shed/ half greenhouse, it was a dream space. I had already considered building a greenhouse out of old windows, so this would save a lot of work! Not to mention, as a custom order build I could even have it painted pink!! 💖

We dug out and filled up a gravel foundation, and the delivery was smooth and fun to watch. She’s an eye catcher for sure!

It took me months to decide what I wanted to do with the interior of the greenhouse. I couldn’t decide on a floor stain color or countertop surface. This stain didn’t even turn out as the color I was going for (was supposed to be a very dark walnut), but I ended up loving how it looked! For the countertops I wanted something waterproof but pretty, since it would be holding trays of seedlings and pots of dirt, but also serve as a backdrop for original artwork whenever I’m able to paint outside. I had this idea of a tile mosaic stuck in my head that I knew would be a ton of work, so I spent a longgg time trying to talk myself out of it…. but eventually said “to heck with it” and went tile shopping 😁

Keep in mind this was also being used as the chicken supply storage area, as the coop is in the other side of this shed. I painted white around all the windows before starting the tile.

The guys at Lowe’s must have thought I was crazy picking out this assortment! I think I had 34 sheets. Went for a neutral color palette with hints of cool blue/green.

Ripping each tile piece off the fiberglass mesh is such a process in itself, and definitely requires gloves because ouchh 😅 Then keep in mind you need space for all the loose pieces as you play with the pattern you create. Lots of puzzle work! I tried to shape my pieces into a subtle floral design, with this being a greenhouse and all.

Once I had it all laid out, I had to carefully glue down every. single. piece. And then grout!

Choosing a grout color

Overall very, very happy with the results. It’s not hard to clean up after messy plant projects, and on sunny days the tiles shine in such a happy way.

Since then I’ve added shelves over the windows, using antique brackets from the original old well shed that used to stand outside the house. I’ve dreamed of using them again for so long!

Outside we also added a window box and shutters, and mounted an antique garden gate on the deck. I just love all of it!! Maybe if I’m lucky this year I can work on a stone path and some landscaping. Inside the other half we crafted the chicken coop and built the big run off that end, which maybe I’ll create a separate post for later!
